A Famous Military Leader
Kote Abkhazi was one of the four heirs of a famous Prince Nikoloz Abkhazi from Kakheti and Princess Nino Chavchavadze, the daughter of Grigol chavchavadze.
The Abkhazians from Kakheti were the Shervashidzes. At the beginning of the 17th century the Ottoman Empire invaded Abkhazia. The Dadians became dominant in Samegrelo. For this reason, one branch of the Shervashidzes could not stay there any longer. Teimuraz II gave them the estate of one of the Vachnadze’s destroyed family in Kardenakhi.
The local residents called them the Abkhazians from which their surname was originated.
Besides, Kote Abkhazi was a nephew of Ilia Chavchavadze and he was very proud of this fact.
In spite of the fact that Kote Abkhazi was from a wealthy aristocratic family, he had never abused his position and had always served his country. He was a young man when he was elected the head of liberal nobility of the east Georgia. Later, he became a member of the state council. He was actively involved in Georgia's public life and sponsored several social and economic projects.
He was a brave military leader. For this reason, he was called to an active army service with the outbreak of World War I. He was very satisfied with the overthrow of Tsarism Regime.
He was an organizer of the First National Congress which gave the Kakhetian nobles’ estate to the Georgian people.
Kote Abkhazi was actively involved in the establishment of Tbilisi State University and in the proclamation of independence of the Democratic Republic of Georgia.
He was elected to the Constituent Assembly of Georgia and became a chairman of the National Democratic Party.
In his mind, it was cowardice to leave the country in difficulties. For this reason, he stayed in Georgia after the Soviet Russia occupied the country. He deemed that the Georgians had lost one fight and not the war. He joined the underground movement Committee for Independence of Georgia where Kote Abkhazi headed its Military Centre.
In autumn of 1922, after the Bolsheviks had suppressed the Khevsuretians’ uprising, the Cheka began to arrest rebels.
Kote Abkhazi was deemed to be the main figure of military center. The delegate of Military Committee warned him against a pending arrest. For this reason, he advised Kote Abkhazi to go abroad where his wife and children lived. But he answered the following: “Thank you for your care but I can’t leave my country and the Georgian people in such a difficult situation. The General never leaves the battle. I will fight for the independence of our country till the end! ”
Indeed, little time has passed. On March 3, 1923 the order of Kote Abkhazi’s arrest was passed.
At the end of March a lot of people were arrested by the Cheka, among whom was Kote Abkhazi.
Although the detainees had been tortured for three months, the enemy was not able to break their courage.
According to the resolution passed by the Special Transcaucasian Committee on March 19, 1923, Kote Abkhazi was to be shot with 24 hours. The blood-suckers executed the sentence at once. Kote Abkhazi, with 15 another Georgian, was shot near Vake Park.
The heroes died with the following word: “Long live the independent Georgia!” The words uttered by Kote Abkhazi became a legend: “I am dying with joy because I can sacrifice my life to my country. My death will bring victory to Georgia!”
