Once again about the repressions and the Mingrelians case

At the end of 1951 the intelligentsia were exiled from Georgia to Kazakhstan and Middle Asia on the ground that the Soviet authority didn’t trust them. A special military unit of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs was called up for that case. The following families were exiled: which members were in captive during 1941-1945, those who were in alliance with guerrillas or had relatives abroad, or who were former political prisoners. The lines were deployed in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Sukhumi and Batumi. On December 25, on Christmas Eve of the Catholics over 11.000 people were put on the carriages and settled in uninhabited places.

Among exiled persons were the following re-emigres: Samson Pirtskhalava – active member of the national movement (d. 2466), Nikoloz Inasaridze – writer (d.21212), Jemshid Giunashvili – science, N. Chkhatarashvili, G. Asatiani (son of Parnavaz, 1891, d.38439 and d.13731; Giorgi Alexandres-dze. 1911, d.24144); Guram Gabashvili – architect, art workers: brother and sister T. and G. Maskharashvilis, T. Tsitsishvili and Babo Dadiani; and Z.Kvariani – footballer.

In 1954 the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union passed resolution about releasing the people in exile and giving them back their property.

In 1951 the Georgians were very skeptical about the “Mingrelians case” which has never been investigated. Presumably, this operation was prepared against L. Beria who was under suspicious of Stalin because of his inclination toward the power. The officials from Samegrelo were accused of an attempt to disintegrate Georgia from the Soviet Union and integrate it into Turkey. The following Mingrelian officials were imprisoned: Kirile Bechvaia, Nino Zhvania, Alexandre Mirtskhulava, Mamia Zodelava, Mikheil Baramia and many other innocent people.

The accusations against these people were so ungrounded that they were all released when Stalin died. This case became a black spot of the Communist Party of Georgia.
